The Geological Survey of India Scientific Officers’ Association (GSISOA), established in 1970 and registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961, represents the interests of scientific officers of Geological Survey of India (GSI), an attached office of the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, headquartered in Kolkata. With members spread across various geoscientific divisions, regions, and specializations, GSISOA serves as a unified voice for officers involved in the core geoscientific functions of the organization. GSISOA is dedicated to strengthening scientific leadership, addressing service-related concerns, and ensuring professional growth for its members.

Rooted in the proud heritage of the Geological Survey of India, founded in 1851, GSISOA embodies a continuous tradition of scientific excellence, national service, and professional unity. The GSI, one of the world’s oldest earth science organizations has been instrumental in shaping India’s geological understanding and resource-based development. From its early role in locating coal deposits for the steam transport system to discovering and documenting mineral resources that fuel modern India, GSI’s contributions have been foundational. Its pioneering legacy also extends to the establishment and scientific guidance of national institutions such as ONGC, Coal India Limited (CIL), and MECL. Over the decades, GSI has evolved into a multidisciplinary geoscientific organization of international repute, undertaking systematic geological mapping, mineral resource assessment, geophysical and geochemical surveys, marine and environmental studies, geohazards and advanced research in palaeontology, geochronology, and allied fields. Functioning through a Mission–Region hybrid structure, GSI’s five Missions namely Baseline Geoscience Data Generation, Mineral Resource Assessment, Geoinformatics, Fundamental & Multidisciplinary Geosciences, and Training & Capacity Building, are led by the officers of the Central Geological Service (CGS). The officers perform hard scientific duties in field and laboratory environments, often in remote and challenging terrains. Their work supports the nation’s priorities in mineral development, environmental management, and disaster mitigation, while continually advancing geoscience across all spectra of earth system studies, innovation, and sustainable resource development. This deep scientific engagement reflects the unrelenting commitment of CGS officers to the nation’s geoscientific progress and resilience. As the largest collective of earth scientists in India, GSISOA serves as a vital bridge between geoscience, policy, and society. The Association is dedicated to strengthening scientific leadership, ensuring fair service progression, promoting collaboration, and nurturing the next generation of geoscientists.
